Correspondence, speeches, clippings. Papers are divided into 10 general files that are integrated together and only identified at the box level on the register. Main files are organized as follows
Letterbooks (1907-1912) of Thomas's service in the LDS Japanese Mission. the letters describe his life in the mission, social customs and economic life of the Japanese, and general observations of weather, geography, etc., in other Asian countries.
"Speeches and Articles" (1922-1950) is a file of chronologically arranged drafts and other copies of speeches and address items. Also included is correspondence concerning speech invitations and speech and article publication. An appendix with a chronological listing of speeches is included.
A series of small files with headings of subjects, names and agencies. Topics include the Democratic campaigns of 1932, 36 and 38; lists of contributers and campaign fund disbursement information; and Committee papers such as Committee on Military Affairs, Strategic War Materials, Civil Liberties, Education and Labor, and Mines and Mining. Other subjects not strictly political are also represented. After 1938 similar records are incorporated into the main files.
The "General File" holds the material from daily Senatorial business. Subjects addressed include agriculture, atomic energy, commerce, conservation, church organizations, educational institutions, labor unions and other legislative concerns. Particular mention should be given to the war moblization, prosecution of the war, and peace demobilization, post war leadership, and the United Nations. Chronological by year and thereafter by subject.
"Legislative Files" contain correspondence from all levels with regard to the drafting and passage of legislation. It also includes published and printed legislative records, bills, and resolutions. Chronologic and by broad subject therein.
"Executive Files" These include materials dealing with the interrelation of executive and legislative functioning, mostly correspondence with agencies, the conduct of foreign affairs, subsidy controls, veterans cases, tariffs, immigration, and the administration of justice. Arranged chronologically and then alphabeticaly by entity title.
"Personnel Files" deal with the recruitment and employment of civilian and military personal, including appointments to U.S. military academies. Ordered chronologically and then alphabetically by name.
"Cross Reference File" contain carbons of replies to incoming letters in the mail files. Arranged alphabetically by name or agency.
Miscellaneous materials such as mounted newspaper clippings, invitations, programs, relating to Senator Thomas's public and personal activities.
